Elizabeth City Foundation Grant
The Elizabeth City Foundation has awarded $10,000 to Elizabeth City Habitat for Humanity for its low-income senior repair program. Since the program started three years ago, the organization has repaired seven homes in Pasquotank County for low-income seniors. These repairs have ranged from floor repairs to weatherization.
All of the repairs are made so that people can remain in their homes for as long as possible. This grant will address a need for step-in showers, which are much safer than bath tubs for seniors. Since repairs are limited to $5000 each, adding a step-in shower often exceeds that budget. The organization has worked to bring the cost down by doing the prep and finishing work itself and only hiring a plumber to do the actual shower installation. Even with these steps, the showers are likely to cost at least $2000. This grant will enable us to install them in more of the homes that we repair.
Elizabeth City Habitat for Humanity is now a part of the Albemarle Area United Way. Please visit their website at www.aaunitedway.org.
