Cost Of Home is a five year advocacy campaign sponsored by Habitat for Humanity to raise awareness of the need for affordable housing.
Elizabeth City Habitat for Humanity has joined the campaign and is partnering with local civic, business and government leaders about this important issue.
There are four key areas of the campaign:
1. Resources for production of affordable homes. Policy solutions include: expanding existing resources, housing trust funds, housing bonds, tax credits for affordable housing.
2. Inclusive access to credit. Policy solutions include: expanding downpayment assistance, expanding financial education and housing counseling, and combating predatory lending.
3. Equitable access to land. Policy solutions include: inclusionary housing policies, streamlining land use approvals, and improved zoning ordinances.
4. Creating communities of opportunity. Policy solutions include: expanding home repair/modification assistance, land banking, and property tax relief for lower-income homeowners.
Our advocacy efforts have generally focused on letter writing campaigns to state and federal government officials regarding specific legislation. In the age of Covid-19, we have also been advocating for assistance to lower-income families who have lost income sources.
