Advocate Today

Check out all the ways you can help us advocate for Habitat and affordable housing!

Cost of Home

Finding affordable housing is a problem everywhere in the United States. Nationally, 19 million households or 1 in 6 families pay more than 30 percent of their income on housing.

A recent study conducted by the City of Elizabeth City said, “Although public housing is offered, waiting lists are long, sometimes taking years before there is availability. Some developments don’t accept Section 8 vouchers.” (The Daily Advance, March 15, 2019)

Building on our strong record of advocacy achievements throughout the U.S. and on the unparalleled reputation of Habitat’s network of over 1,200 U.S. affiliates, Habitat for Humanity International will engage housing advocates; Habitat homeowners, volunteers, and supporters; and federal, state and local policymakers to advance access to safe, decent and affordable homes through our first U.S. advocacy campaign.

Elizabeth City Habitat for Humanity has signed on to participate in this five-year advocacy campaign to find the solutions and help create the policies that will allow 10 million individuals to meet their most basic needs. We plan to work with local governments, civic organizations and individuals to address the need for more affordable housing in our area. We invite you to join us in this effort.

Contact echabitat@yahoo.com if you would like to have a member of our local board or homeowner speak to your organization.
